Woods market to locate large grocery in Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN — Missouri grocer Woods Supermarket will open a Johnstown store in early 2024, its 11th supermarket and its first outside of its native Missouri.

The 85,000-square-foot market will be in the Ledge Rock Center at Interstate 25 and Colorado Highway 60 — east across the interstate from the under-construction Buc-ees convenience store development.

The market will specifically be at 4826 W. South First St. on 5.3 acres in the Ledge Rock Center, which will include 750,000 square feet of commercial space along with residential units and hotels. Murdoch’s Ranch and Home Supply will also be in Ledge Rock.

Mike Schlup, planning consultant for Carson Development Inc., the Kansas-based developer of Ledge Rock, said the grocer is likely to open in the first or second quarter of 2024. Foundation work could start as soon as next week.

He described the Woods markets as “upscale, good operators.” He said Carson has not delivered a store for Woods before but Schlup said he has been familiar with the Woods family for many years.

Don and Bertha Woods started the company in 1947 in Long Lane, Missouri, and expanded it within the state. In addition to the 10 supermarkets it owns there, it also has four convenience stores.

“Colorado is a vibrant and growing part of America, combining natural beauty with a diversified and sustainable economic base. When we were approached with the opportunity to partner with Carson Development and Johnstown, we were excited to work with such a quality team to deliver this project,” company president Jeff Woods said in a statement that was printed on the Johnstown town website.

The company expects to hire about 150 workers to staff the store. At 85,000 square feet, the store is nearly 20,000 square feet larger than the south King Soopers location on Eagle Drive in Loveland.
